VoIP 9-1-1 information

Introduction

YOVU wants you to understand the important differences between 9-1-1 service over a VoIP phone and traditional telephone service.

Differences between traditional 9-1-1 and VoIP 9-1-1

With traditional phone service, a 9-1-1 call is sent directly to the nearest emergency response centre. With VoIP phone service, a 9-1-1 call is forwarded to a third-party service provider that automatically or manually routes the call to the appropriate emergency response centre.

Remember to provide your location

A VoIP phone can be moved between locations, and the emergency operator may not have your name, location and contact information. Immediately provide your location and contact information whenever you call 9-1-1. This helps prevent emergency services from being sent to the wrong location.

Be prepared during any service interruption

VoIP phone service depends on an active subscription, Internet connectivity and electrical power. A power, network, or Internet outage, including network congestion, or a disconnected or suspended service may cause a failure, disruption or delay in 9-1-1 service.

Keep an alternative phone service, such as a cellular phone, available to improve access to emergency services during an interruption.

Do not disconnect

Do not disconnect a 9-1-1 call until the emergency dispatcher tells you to do so. If the call is disconnected accidentally, call back immediately.

Keep your service address up to date

YOVU will attempt to provide your registered service address to the emergency operator. Make sure the address associated with each phone number is accurate and current. If a phone moves to a different physical location, contact YOVU Support to update its service address. An outdated address may cause emergency services to be sent to the wrong location.

Inform other users

Tell employees, guests and any other potential users of your YOVU phone service about the nature and limitations of VoIP 9-1-1 calls. Place the provided warning labels where they are clearly visible on or near each phone.

Limitations of liability

The availability and operation of VoIP 9-1-1 service are subject to the terms of your YOVU service agreement. Review your agreement for the limitations that apply to your account, or contact YOVU Support for assistance.
